Blue light glasses have become enormously popular, but do they live up to the claims? As dispensing opticians, we provide evidence-based advice on blue light protection.
What Is Blue Light? Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. Natural blue light from the sun regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Digital screens emit artificial blue light at lower intensities than sunlight.
Digital Eye Strain Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck pain after screen use. The primary cause is not blue light but rather reduced blinking and prolonged near focus.
What Blue Light Lenses Do Quality blue light filtering lenses reduce exposure from screens by 20-40%. They may improve comfort during extended screen use and potentially support better sleep when used in the evening.
What They Do Not Do They do not prevent eye disease, eliminate all digital eye strain, or replace the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds).
Our Recommendation Combine blue light lenses with regular breaks, proper screen distance, adequate lighting, and regular eye tests. We offer blue light coating on all lens types at Wootton Opticians.
